What is Tether (Faster Payments)

Faster Payments is the UK network that moves pounds between bank accounts in seconds, at any hour. Selling Tether through it means Banxa buys your USDT at a quoted rate and sends sterling straight to your account.

The pounds land in a UK account held in your own name, identified by a sort code and account number rather than the IBAN a euro transfer would use, and the name on that account has to match the name on your verified Banxa account. Payouts aimed at a business account, or at an account in someone else's name, get rejected by the receiving bank rather than queued for review.

UK banks run Confirmation of Payee on the sterling leg, which compares the payee name against the name registered on the destination account, so spelling differences that would pass unnoticed in other countries are caught before the money moves. Treat a name warning as a reason to stop rather than something to click past.

The network question is sharper in the UK than in Europe. Tether is issued across many chains, and several of those versions are restricted for UK sellers even though they work elsewhere. BNB Smart Chain, Ethereum, Tron, Solana and Polygon are the ones commonly available here. Because the restriction attaches to the coin and the network together, the list on your own quote screen is the only reliable one.

Both clocks are short once the network is right, though they are not equal: confirmation takes seconds on Tron or Solana and minutes on Ethereum, and Faster Payments then settles in seconds regardless. Because the network runs at nights and weekends alike, there is no business-day count to work around and no waiting for a banking morning.

Cost is carried inside the rate you are quoted. Two things sit in it: the spread on the sale, and the conversion from dollars to pounds. The network fee to move the USDT is separate and paid on the crypto side, where Tron and Ethereum differ sharply.

Per-transaction ceilings and rolling cumulative limits both apply, and crossing one usually triggers further checks rather than a refusal. Your bank also sets its own Faster Payments receiving limit, often lower than the scheme permits, and a payment above it can be held at their end rather than ours.

A first sale brings an identity check even on an account that has bought before. Larger sales add questions about where the crypto came from, and answering those quickly is what keeps a payout quick.

Failures divide by side. On the sterling leg it is a wrong sort code or account number, a closed account, or a Confirmation of Payee mismatch, and returned Faster Payments usually come back quickly. On the crypto leg it is sending from a network that was not offered, which is the expensive one and rarely reversible.

Once the USDT reaches Banxa's address it is settled on-chain and cannot be recalled. Only the sterling leg stays correctable.

A dollar stablecoin does not remove currency exposure from a sterling cash-out. It fixes it early. Your pound figure is set at quote time using that moment's dollar rate, and the sale then completes in minutes on terms already agreed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Commonly BNB Smart Chain, Ethereum, Tron, Solana and Polygon. Several other Tether versions that work elsewhere in Europe are restricted for UK sellers, because availability is set per network and per country rather than for Tether as a whole. Your quote screen carries the list that applies.

Tether tracks the US dollar, so selling into pounds involves a conversion. Your quote already contains that conversion along with the spread on the sale. It will not equal a dollar-to-sterling sum worked out elsewhere, because such a sum leaves the spread out of the calculation.

On network fees, usually by a wide margin, and on a large transfer that gap is real money. It changes nothing on the sterling side. The spread inside your quote and the seconds-long Faster Payments transfer are identical whichever supported network you send from.
