What is Polygon
Selling Polygon (the asset formerly known as MATIC, now POL) carries a few practical wrinkles because of the migration that ran through 2024 and 2025.
The basic flow is standard. Send POL or MATIC to a regulated platform, complete KYC, agree on the sell rate, choose a payout. The migration matters because anyone who has not yet migrated MATIC to POL needs to do that first. The Polygon Labs team rolled out the migration through 2024 with widespread exchange and infrastructure support, and the conversion is one-to-one, but unmigrated MATIC sitting in cold storage from years ago still needs to go through the swap before some venues will accept it. Banxa accepts both during the transition window per regional rules.
Polygon itself is technically several different chains. The original Polygon PoS sidechain remains the most-used; Polygon zkEVM, a zero-knowledge rollup secured by Ethereum, runs separately. The asset that powers both networks (and the new Polygon AggLayer settlement layer) is POL after the migration. From a sell perspective, the chain on which you hold the asset matters because deposit addresses are network-specific.
Most retail holders of POL or MATIC bought during 2021 to 2024, when Polygon PoS was the dominant Ethereum scaling solution. The user base shifted partly to other rollups (Arbitrum, Optimism, Base) over 2023 to 2024. The result is that many POL sellers are exiting longer-term positions held through significant volatility. Cost basis tracking matters: token migrations sometimes complicate cost basis for tax purposes, depending on jurisdiction. Country pages cover specifics.
Network fees on Polygon PoS are very low (typically fractions of a cent), so sending POL to a sell platform is cheap. Confirmation is usually under 30 seconds.
Selling POL through Banxa is the standard flow. Pick POL (or MATIC during the transition window), enter the amount, choose the network, complete KYC, send to the deposit address. Network confirmation in seconds; cash settlement depends on the payout rail.
Token migrations carry their own operational risks; always confirm the asset and network in your wallet before sending. Crypto prices are volatile. This is not financial advice.

Frequently Asked Questions
For most regulated platforms, yes. The migration began in late 2024 and most major venues now require POL. The conversion is one-to-one. Migration tools are available through Polygon's official portal and through major exchanges. Banxa accepts both during the transition window per regional rules; check the deposit screen for which is currently supported in your country.
Whichever the deposit address specifies. Polygon PoS is the most common; Polygon zkEVM runs separately and uses different addresses. Sending POL on the wrong network to a deposit address typically loses the funds. Banxa shows the network alongside the address. Confirm both before sending.
Treatment varies by jurisdiction. Some tax authorities treat the one-to-one swap as a non-taxable event preserving original cost basis; others treat it as a disposal triggering a deemed sale. Country guidance has evolved through 2024 and 2025 as more jurisdictions issued specific rulings. Consult a tax adviser if your migration involved a meaningful position.
