What is Ethereum (SEPA)

SEPA is the scheme euro-area banks use to move euros, and it is the route a sale of Ethereum takes to reach your account. Banxa buys your ETH at a quoted rate and sends euros on as a standard credit transfer. Your bank treats the arrival as an ordinary incoming payment.

The euros land in a euro account in your own name, matching your verified Banxa details. A payout aimed at a company account, or at an account in a partner's name, is rejected by the receiving bank rather than held for review. Checking that one field before you sell prevents most failed cash-outs.

Ethereum can be sent from more than one network, and the choice affects what the move costs you. Mainnet is supported, as are several layer twos including Arbitrum, Base, Optimism, Linea and zkSync. The supported set is not identical in every country and it changes, so read the network from the quote screen rather than assuming last month's list still holds.

Two clocks run. Ethereum produces a block roughly every twelve seconds, and Banxa waits for enough of them to treat the deposit as settled, which takes minutes rather than hours. The bank clock follows: SEPA settlement is quoted at one to three business days, and business days exclude weekends and public holidays.

Cost sits inside the rate you are quoted rather than on a separate fee line. The euro figure shown before you confirm is what you receive. The gas to move ETH is separate and paid on the crypto side, and this is where the network choice bites: a mainnet transfer during busy hours can cost many times what the same transfer costs on Arbitrum or Base.

Per-transaction ceilings and rolling cumulative limits both apply, and crossing one usually triggers further checks rather than a refusal. The thresholds that apply to you appear at quote time and follow your verification level and your country.

A first sale brings an identity check even on an account with a buying history, because sending money out carries obligations that taking money in does not. Larger sales add questions about the origin of the funds. Answering those without delay is what keeps a payout at the short end of its quoted range.

Failures divide cleanly. On the euro side, a wrong IBAN, a closed account or a name mismatch each end in a returned payment that takes days to unwind and comes back as euros. On the crypto side, sending ETH from a network Banxa did not offer for your sale is the costly mistake, and it is not usually recoverable by contacting support.

Once your ETH reaches Banxa's address the transfer is settled on-chain and there is no mechanism to reverse it. From that point everything recoverable sits on the banking side.

The exposure specific to this rail is time, not volatility. Your euro figure is fixed when you accept the quote, so a price fall afterwards costs you nothing, but the money is in transit for days. If the euros are needed by a date, begin well before it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes for the networks Banxa supports, which include Arbitrum, Base, Optimism, Linea and zkSync alongside mainnet. Availability differs by country and changes over time, so the quote screen is the authority. Sending from a network that was not listed for your sale risks funds that support cannot usually retrieve.

On the crypto side, considerably. Gas on Ethereum mainnet during busy periods can dwarf the same transfer on Arbitrum or Base. It makes no difference to the euro side: the spread inside your quote and the one to three day SEPA settlement are the same whichever network you send from.

Ethereum confirmations take minutes, then SEPA settlement takes one to three business days. The bank leg is the long one. Weekends and public holidays do not count, so a sale confirmed on Friday evening will commonly reach the account on Tuesday or Wednesday.
