What is USD Coin (NPP Direct Entry)
An Australian dollar payout is a bank transfer to a BSB and account number, and it may travel by either of two networks. The New Payments Platform settles within minutes and runs outside banking hours. Direct entry, the older system, clears on a business-day cycle. Nothing you do at the point of sale decides which.
The token aims to hold a value of one US dollar, so this conversion is mostly an exchange rate with a small crypto adjustment layered on top. The peg contributes a rounding difference in normal conditions, while the US dollar to Australian dollar rate does the rest of the work.
The peg is a market price rather than a fixed value, and it has moved. In March 2023 the token traded near eighty-seven cents over a weekend after a bank holding part of its reserves failed, recovering once those deposits were made whole. Reserves are held in cash and short-dated government debt and attested monthly, though attestation is not the same thing as a full audit.
Payment reaches an Australian dollar account in your own name, addressed by a six-digit BSB followed by the account number. An account number error is worse than a BSB error, since the money can arrive at a real account instead of failing outright.
Because routing follows the digits rather than the name, the restriction to your own account comes from Banxa and is checked before sending rather than by the bank afterwards. A payout aimed at someone else's account is not permitted even where the receiving bank would accept it without question.
Two clocks run in sequence. Confirmation depends on which chain you send from, as USD Coin is issued across several and sell support varies by chain and country together. The banking leg afterwards takes moments, so the blockchain carries nearly all of the wait.
The consequence is a settlement window rather than a settlement time. The faster network pays out within minutes on any day; direct entry runs on business days only. You will not know in advance which applies, so treat rapid arrival as the good case and a business day as the one to plan around.
Your own bank sets a ceiling on faster transfers, independent of any limit at the Banxa end, and on a larger sale that ceiling is often the first constraint you meet rather than the last. It can generally be raised through online banking if you plan ahead.
Cost is carried in the quoted rate rather than itemised, holding both the spread and the currency conversion, so the figure shown before you confirm is what reaches the account. Limits apply per transaction and across rolling periods, varying with verification level and location, and a first cash-out normally brings an identity check.
Once the USDC reaches Banxa's address it is settled on its chain and cannot be recalled. On the banking side, a payment sent to a wrong but valid account is only recoverable through your bank's tracing process, which takes considerably longer than checking the digits beforehand.
