Selling Bitcoin in France
Selling Bitcoin in France follows the French capital gains framework for occasional crypto sellers under article 150 VH bis of the Code general des impots.
Mechanics. Send BTC to a regulated platform, complete identity verification under MiCA and French AML rules, agree on the sell rate in euros, choose a payout. SEPA bank transfer (virement) is the default for sells through Banxa in France; SEPA Instant settles in seconds where supported. Cards are available with lower limits.
French income tax. Under article 150 VH bis CGI, capital gains from disposals of digital assets by individuals on an occasional basis are generally subject to the prelevement forfaitaire unique (PFU) at a rate of 30% (12.8% income tax + 17.2% social contributions, subject to applicable rules). An option for the progressive income tax scale is available, which may suit lower-income brackets. Disposals below an annual EUR 305 de minimis threshold are generally not taxable. Habitual or professional trading falls under the BIC (benefices industriels et commerciaux) regime at progressive rates. The line between occasional and habitual is fact-specific. This is general information, not tax advice. Rules depend on individual circumstances and may change. Consult a French tax adviser for material amounts.
Reporting. Disposals are declared on Form 2086 alongside the annual income tax return. Records of acquisition cost and disposal proceeds in euros are required.
Regulatory framework. AMF (Autorite des marches financiers) supervises crypto-asset service providers in France under the PSAN registration regime, transitioning to MiCA authorisation. MiCA applies EU-wide since December 2024. Banxa Europe IV BV (EUIV) services French customers under MiCA.
Important information for retail customers in the EU. Crypto-assets are not deposits and are not covered by deposit-guarantee schemes. Authorisation of crypto-asset service providers under MiCA does not constitute an investor-compensation scheme and does not protect against price losses. Crypto prices can fall sharply, including to zero in some assets, and you can lose the full amount invested. Settlement of any sell order depends on identity verification, payment processing, and blockchain confirmation. The tax information on this page is general only and is not tax advice; rules depend on individual circumstances and may change. The Dutch financial markets authority (AFM) publishes consumer-facing information on crypto-asset risks for EU retail clients.

Frequently Asked Questions
You send BTC from your own wallet to the address shown in the sell flow, the sale executes at the agreed rate, and your euros go out by SEPA. Two things set the pace: the Bitcoin network confirms transfers in roughly ten-minute steps, and the bank leg follows, typically within one business day for a standard SEPA payment, or in seconds where your bank supports SEPA Instant.
Three essentials: a wallet holding the Bitcoin you intend to sell, a one-time identity verification with photo ID (normally minutes, skipped entirely on later sales), and a euro bank account held in your own name. That last point matters most, because the payout account has to match the name you verified; payments to someone else's account are not made.
Usually one of three things: the BTC transfer is still gathering confirmations on the network (each takes about ten minutes), the receiving account name does not match your verified name, or the euros went out by standard SEPA and are inside the normal business-day window, with weekends adding time. You can watch your sent BTC by looking up the transaction ID in any block explorer. Sale limits vary with verification level and appear upfront.
