What is Bitcoin (Faster Payments)
Faster Payments is the UK network banks use to move pounds between accounts in seconds, at any hour, including weekends. Selling Bitcoin through it means Banxa buys your BTC at a quoted rate and pushes sterling to your account over that network.
The pounds land in a UK bank account held in your own name, identified by a sort code and account number rather than an IBAN. The name has to match your verified Banxa account, and payouts aimed at a business account, or at an account in a partner's name, are rejected.
UK banks run Confirmation of Payee on transfers, a name-checking service that compares the name on the instruction against the name on the destination account. It is the reason a small spelling difference gets caught here that might slip through in other countries. Treat a name warning as a stop signal rather than something to click past.
The two clocks on this sale are the reverse of what most sellers expect. Bitcoin is the slow leg: your coins need to reach Banxa's address and gather enough confirmations, at roughly ten minutes a block and longer when the network is congested. Faster Payments then settles in seconds, so almost all of the wait belongs to the blockchain, not the bank.
That also means weekends behave differently from a euro cash-out. Faster Payments runs continuously, so a Sunday sale pays out on Sunday, with no business-day count to work around.
Cost is folded into the rate you are quoted rather than itemised. The sterling figure shown before you confirm is what reaches your account, so comparing it against the market price shows you the spread. The Bitcoin network fee is separate, paid to miners out of the coins you send, and it rises when the mempool is busy.
Per-transaction ceilings and rolling cumulative limits both apply, and crossing one usually triggers further checks rather than a refusal. Your own thresholds appear at quote time. Note that your bank sets its own Faster Payments receiving limit too, which is often lower than the scheme allows, and a payment above it can be held for manual review at their end rather than ours.
A first sale brings an identity check even on an account with a buying history, because money leaving the system carries obligations that money entering it does not. Larger sales add questions about where the crypto came from, and answering those without delay is what keeps a payout quick.
Failures on this rail have a UK flavour. A wrong sort code or account number, an account that has been closed, or a name that fails Confirmation of Payee will each stop the payment. A returned Faster Payment usually comes back quickly rather than over days, which is one genuine advantage of the network, though the sale itself has already completed at the original rate.
Once your Bitcoin reaches Banxa's address it is settled on the network and cannot be pulled back. From that point only the sterling leg can be corrected.
The exposure worth naming is confirmation time against a moving price. Your sterling figure is fixed when you accept the quote, so the wait for confirmations does not change what you receive, but a congested network can stretch that wait well past the ten minutes a single block suggests.

Because the delay is Bitcoin's, not the bank's. Your coins must reach Banxa and gather confirmations at roughly ten minutes a block, and longer when the network is busy. Faster Payments then moves the pounds in seconds. The chain governs the timing on this rail, which reverses the usual expectation.

Yes. Faster Payments runs continuously, including nights and weekends, so a Sunday sale pays out on Sunday. There is no business-day count to work around, which is the main practical difference between this rail and a euro transfer over SEPA.
