What is Sui
Sui came out of a team that had already tried to build a global payments network once. Mysten Labs was founded by engineers who worked on Diem at Meta, the project regulators eventually forced to shut down, and Sui launched in May 2023 carrying much of what they learned from it.
Its central idea is that most transactions do not conflict with each other. If you send coins to one person while somebody else sends different coins to somebody else, there is no reason those two events need to be ordered relative to one another. Most blockchains queue everything into a single sequence anyway, which is why they slow down under load.
Sui treats the ledger as a collection of objects rather than a list of account balances. Transactions that touch unrelated objects run in parallel, and only ones that genuinely contend for the same object need full ordering. Straightforward transfers can settle in well under a second.
That distinction sounds academic until a network is under load. Chains that order everything into one sequence degrade for every user when a single popular application gets busy, because unrelated transactions end up queuing behind it. Splitting the work by object is a direct attempt to stop one busy corner of the chain slowing down everything else.
The programming language is called Move, a variant built around the same object model. It makes assets first-class things the language understands, which closes off a category of bug that has cost other chains a great deal of money. The trade is that developers cannot bring Solidity code across unchanged, so the ecosystem has to be built rather than ported.
SUI itself pays transaction fees, secures the network through staking, and carries a slice of the storage fund, an unusual mechanism where a portion of fees is held to compensate the future cost of keeping data available. It is a more thought-through answer to state growth than most chains attempt.
The counterweight is age. Sui is young by the standards of the assets alongside it, and a large share of its supply is still vesting on a schedule that runs for years, which puts a steady stream of new coins into the market regardless of demand. Both facts belong in any assessment of it, and neither is hidden: the vesting schedule is published.
Buying is straightforward. Pick an amount, pay by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or bank transfer, and the SUI arrives at an address you control. It runs on its own network, so you need a wallet that supports Sui specifically.
Treat it as a bet on execution and adoption rather than on an established position. The engineering is serious, the track record is short.

Frequently Asked Questions
Parallel execution built on objects rather than accounts. Transactions touching unrelated objects run at the same time instead of queuing in one sequence, so ordinary transfers can finalise in under a second. Only transactions genuinely competing for the same object need full ordering.
It pays transaction fees, it is staked to help secure the network, and part of what you pay feeds a storage fund that covers the long-term cost of keeping data available. That last mechanism is unusual, and it is a deliberate answer to the problem of chains growing indefinitely.
Yes, one that supports the Sui network. SUI is not an Ethereum token and a standard Ethereum address will not receive it. Set your wallet to Sui and check the address against the one shown before sending, since transfers to the wrong network are usually unrecoverable.
