What is Arbitrum

Arbitrum exists because Ethereum got expensive. When the network is busy, a straightforward transaction can cost more than the thing you are trying to do, and that priced out most of what people actually wanted to build.

The fix is a rollup. Transactions execute on a separate chain that batches them up and posts the results back to Ethereum, so Ethereum still provides the security while the work happens somewhere cheaper. Arbitrum, built by Offchain Labs and live since 2021, is the largest of these by activity.

Its particular flavour is called an optimistic rollup, and the name is literal. Results are assumed correct and posted straight away, and anyone who spots a bad one has a window to challenge it with proof. Being right by default is fast, and the safeguard is that being wrong is catchable.

That design has one consequence worth knowing before you commit funds. Moving assets from Arbitrum back to Ethereum through the native bridge takes about seven days, because the challenge window has to elapse first. Third-party bridges shortcut it for a fee, but the underlying wait is real and it surprises people.

The ARB token is where most newcomers get confused. ARB does not pay for gas. Fees on Arbitrum are paid in ETH, exactly as on Ethereum, just far less of it. ARB is a governance token, distributed in a March 2023 airdrop, and what it buys you is a vote in the Arbitrum DAO over treasury and protocol decisions.

So holding ARB is a bet on the network's governance mattering, not a way to transact more cheaply. Those are different propositions and it is worth being clear which one you want.

The DAO those votes govern is not a token gesture either. It controls a treasury denominated in billions of ARB and decides how it gets spent, which has already produced contested proposals over funding, incentives and where the protocol's revenue should go. Governance of that size draws genuine disagreement, and holders who never vote leave those decisions to those who do.

There is also more than one Arbitrum chain. Arbitrum One carries the bulk of the activity, while Arbitrum Nova targets cheaper, higher-volume use at a different security trade-off. Most wallets and most balances mean One, but it is worth checking which network yours is set to.

Buying is straightforward. Pick an amount, pay by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or bank transfer, and the ARB arrives at an address you control. ARB lives on the Arbitrum network, so make sure your wallet is set to Arbitrum and not to Ethereum mainnet before you send.

Weigh it as a governance asset on infrastructure that is genuinely used. Activity on the network and the value of a vote over it are related, but they are not the same thing.

Frequently Asked Questions

No, and this catches people out. Gas on Arbitrum is paid in ETH, the same as on Ethereum, only much cheaper. ARB is a governance token that gives holders a vote in the Arbitrum DAO. You can use the network without ever holding any ARB at all.

Because Arbitrum is an optimistic rollup. Results are posted as correct straight away, and a challenge window stays open so anyone can dispute a bad one with proof. Native withdrawals wait for that window to close. Third-party bridges will move funds sooner for a fee.

Arbitrum. ARB is issued on the Arbitrum network, so your wallet needs to be set to it rather than to Ethereum mainnet before you receive anything. Sending to an address on the wrong network is one of the few mistakes here that is usually not recoverable.
