What people actually use it for is tipping, small payments and community fundraising. In 2014 the community put a Jamaican bobsleigh team on a plane to Sochi and funded clean water projects in Kenya, and the culture of giving small amounts away has stuck.

The other half of the story is attention. Dogecoin trades on sentiment more than fundamentals, and a single well-timed post from a prominent account has moved it double digits in an hour. That cuts both ways and it is not a pattern you can plan around.

Buying is straightforward. Pick your amount, pay by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or bank transfer, and the DOGE arrives at a wallet address you control. Dogecoin runs on its own network, so you need a wallet that supports it, and a Bitcoin address will not do, since coins sent to the wrong chain do not come back.

Treat it as what it is. Dogecoin has outlived nearly everything launched alongside it, and it has also fallen more than 90 percent from a high before. Both facts are true at once, and only you can decide what weight to give them.
