Buy Optimism

Optimism is one of the two large optimistic rollups scaling Ethereum, and the one that has done most to turn its own technology into shared infrastructure. Transactions execute on a cheaper chain and the results are posted back to Ethereum, which keeps Ethereum's security while removing most of the cost.

The word optimistic is literal. Results are published as correct without being proved upfront, and a challenge window stays open for anyone to dispute one with evidence. Assuming honesty is fast, and the safeguard is that dishonesty can be caught and reversed within that window.

That window has a consequence worth knowing before you move funds. Withdrawing back to Ethereum through the native bridge takes roughly seven days, because the challenge period must elapse first. Third-party bridges will front the money sooner for a fee, but the underlying wait does not go away.

The codebase behind it, the OP Stack, is where Optimism differs from its rivals. Rather than keeping it proprietary, the project released it for others to build their own chains from, and since 2023 several significant networks have launched on it, Coinbase's Base among them. That collection of chains is the Superchain, and the strategic bet is that being the shared foundation matters more than being the biggest single chain.

It is a real bet rather than a slogan, and it cuts both ways. Every chain built on the stack strengthens the case that this is the default way to scale Ethereum, while also meaning Optimism's own chain is no longer the only place its work shows up. Whether that breadth converts into value for the token is exactly the open question.

The OP token is the part newcomers misread most often. OP does not pay for gas. Fees on Optimism are paid in ETH, exactly as on Ethereum, just far less of it. OP is a governance token in the Optimism Collective, which is split into a Token House voting with tokens and a Citizens' House voting on public goods funding.

That second chamber funds work retroactively, paying for things that already proved useful rather than promising money for things that might be. It is a genuinely unusual governance design, and it is much of what you are buying into.

So the honest framing is that OP is a claim on the governance of infrastructure, not a way to use that infrastructure more cheaply. You can transact on Optimism all day without ever holding any.
