Chainlink solves a problem most people never realise blockchains have. A smart contract cannot see outside its own chain, and it has no way to learn the price of gold, whether a flight landed, or what the dollar is worth this second, because everything it knows has to come from the ledger itself.

That gap matters because most useful contracts depend on outside facts. A lending protocol that liquidates positions needs to know prices. An insurance contract that pays out on a delayed flight needs to know the flight was delayed. Without a trustworthy way to import that information, the contract is inert.

Chainlink is a network of independent node operators that fetch data, agree on it, and publish the result on chain. Launched in 2017 with mainnet arriving in 2019, it aggregates across many sources and many nodes, so no single feed and no single operator can quietly move a number. The nodes are paid in LINK, which is what the token is for.

Those price feeds now sit underneath a large share of decentralised finance, which is the honest measure of the project. When a lending market liquidates a position, something has to say what the collateral is worth, and more often than not it is a Chainlink feed.

The reason the design is careful is that oracles have been attacked before. Manipulate the price a contract reads and you can drain it without breaking any code, and several protocols have lost heavily that way by relying on a single thin market for their prices. Aggregating across many independent sources and operators is the direct answer to that failure mode, and it is why the architecture looks more elaborate than just reading one exchange feed.

The token itself is an ERC-20 on Ethereum, with a total supply of one billion fixed at launch. That detail matters when you buy, because LINK is not its own chain. It lives on Ethereum, so you need an Ethereum wallet and an Ethereum address to receive it, and gas is paid in ETH rather than in LINK.

Newer work extends the same idea across chains rather than just into them, letting contracts on one network act on information and messages from another. Whether that becomes as central as the price feeds is still an open question.

Buying is direct. Choose an amount, pay by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or bank transfer, and the LINK lands at an address you control. Confirm the address is an Ethereum one before you send.

What you should weigh is that Chainlink's value is tied to how much activity actually needs verified outside data. That is a real dependency on the wider market rather than on the token itself, and it can thin out quickly when activity does.
