What is Cosmos
Cosmos set out to answer a question the rest of the industry was ignoring in 2016. Everyone was arguing about which single blockchain would win. Cosmos assumed none of them would, and asked instead how a great many chains might talk to each other.
The answer has two halves: the Cosmos SDK is a toolkit for building a purpose-built blockchain rather than deploying a contract onto someone else's, and the Inter-Blockchain Communication protocol, IBC, is the standard those chains use to pass tokens and messages between themselves. Together they let a project run its own chain with its own rules and still connect to everything else.
Underneath sits Tendermint, since renamed CometBFT, a consensus engine with a property most chains lack: instant finality. When a block is agreed it is final, with no waiting for confirmations to stack up and no possibility of the chain reorganising underneath you, and blocks arrive in a handful of seconds.
The approach worked. dYdX, Celestia, Injective and a long list of others are built with the SDK, and the model of sovereign application-specific chains is now mainstream thinking.
Here is the nuance that anyone buying ATOM should understand, because it is the crux of the whole investment case. ATOM secures the Cosmos Hub specifically, and it is not a fee token for the wider ecosystem. A chain built with the Cosmos SDK generally runs on its own token and owes nothing to ATOM, so the SDK's popularity does not automatically flow back to it.
That gap between ecosystem success and token value has been the central debate around ATOM for years, and various proposals have tried to close it by giving the Hub more of a role. Interchain security, where the Hub's validators secure other chains in return for a share of their revenue, is the most serious of them. Whether any of it succeeds is unresolved, and you should treat it as unresolved rather than assume it away.
That honesty cuts both ways: the technology has been adopted far more widely than most projects of its era manage, and the case for the token is weaker than the case for the software. Those are two separate judgements and it is worth making both deliberately.
ATOM itself is staked to secure the Hub and used in its governance, and Cosmos governance is unusually active by the standards of the sector, with contested proposals decided by real turnout rather than rubber-stamped. Staking carries an unbonding period of about twenty-one days, during which the tokens cannot be moved at all, which is worth planning around before you commit them.
Buying is direct: pick an amount, pay by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or bank transfer, and the ATOM arrives at a Cosmos address you control.

Frequently Asked Questions
Not automatically, and this is the key thing to understand. Chains built with the Cosmos SDK usually run their own token and owe nothing to ATOM, which secures the Cosmos Hub specifically. The ecosystem growing does not mechanically translate into value for the token.
The Inter-Blockchain Communication protocol, the standard Cosmos chains use to pass tokens and messages to one another. It is what makes a network of sovereign chains work as something more than a set of isolated ledgers, and it is the project's most widely adopted piece of work.
About twenty-one days. Staked ATOM is bonded to a validator and cannot be transferred during the unbonding period, so plan around it rather than assuming access. The wait is set by the network and nothing at the point of sale can shorten it.
