What is Polkadot
Polkadot tries to solve a problem most people outside crypto don't think about: blockchains can't talk to each other. Bitcoin doesn't know what Ethereum is doing. Ethereum can't read Solana's state. Every chain sits in its own walled garden. Polkadot's bet is that connecting these chains matters more than replacing them all with one.
Gavin Wood founded the project. He co-founded Ethereum and wrote its original technical specification (the Yellow Paper) before leaving the Ethereum Foundation in 2016. Polkadot's mainnet launched in May 2020 after years of development at Web3 Foundation and Parity Technologies.
Here's the architecture. A central chain called the Relay Chain handles security and consensus. Connected to it are specialised chains called parachains, each optimised for a specific purpose: DeFi, identity, gaming, file storage, whatever the builders need. Every parachain inherits security from the Relay Chain rather than assembling its own validator set from scratch. A new blockchain project could theoretically get serious security on day one without recruiting thousands of independent validators.
Parachain slots were originally allocated through auctions where projects locked DOT tokens for lease periods of roughly 96 weeks. Novel mechanism, genuine economic alignment: if a project flopped, locked DOT eventually returned to contributors. But the barrier was high for smaller teams. Polkadot responded pragmatically with Agile Coretime in 2024, letting projects buy blockspace on-demand instead of committing to multi-year leases. Smart pivot. Fixed-term auctions were limiting adoption.
DOT does three things within the network. Governance: holders vote on protocol upgrades through OpenGov, where proposals get debated and decided on-chain. Staking: validators and nominators lock DOT to secure the Relay Chain, earning typically 10% to 15% annually (before accounting for inflation). And bonding: DOT was used for parachain auctions and now participates in the Coretime model.
An honest complexity here. Polkadot's architecture is technically ambitious but much harder to explain than "it's fast" (Solana) or "it's money" (Bitcoin). Communication challenges have arguably held back adoption. Developer interest and total value locked across parachains have grown steadily but sit below Ethereum, Solana, and several other chains. Sophisticated technology alone has never guaranteed market success.
No hard supply cap on DOT. Inflationary by design, roughly 10% annually, with new tokens minted as staking rewards. Transaction fees and treasury mechanisms burn a portion, but holding DOT without staking means your position dilutes over time.
By market cap, DOT has ranged from top ten to top twenty. Above $55 at its November 2021 peak, then drawdowns exceeding 90% in bear markets. Standard altcoin volatility.
Buying Polkadot through Banxa takes minutes. Select DOT, enter your amount in local currency, choose a payment method (card, bank transfer, Apple Pay, or other local options), and provide your Polkadot wallet address. Banxa is publicly listed and licensed in multiple jurisdictions with full KYC and AML compliance.
Crypto markets are volatile. Interoperability is technically difficult, and there's no guarantee Polkadot's approach prevails. This is not financial advice.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, DOT has no supply cap. New tokens are minted as staking rewards at roughly 10% annually. If you hold DOT without staking, your share of the total supply shrinks over time. Staking offsets this dilution, with rewards typically between 10% and 15% before inflation. Think of staking not as earning yield but as maintaining your proportional ownership.
Parachains are specialised blockchains that connect to Polkadot's central Relay Chain and inherit its security. Each one is built for a specific purpose like DeFi, privacy, or identity. As a DOT holder, parachains matter because they're the actual applications creating demand for the token. More useful parachains means more activity on the network, which is what gives DOT utility beyond speculation.
Once your DOT arrives in your wallet, you can nominate validators through the Polkadot.js interface or wallets like Nova Wallet and Fearless Wallet. Minimum staking amounts fluctuate but have historically required at least 250 DOT for direct nomination. Nomination pools offer a lower entry point, sometimes as little as 1 DOT. Staked tokens are locked for 28 days when you decide to unbond, so plan accordingly.
