What is Litecoin (United States)

Selling Litecoin in the US uses the standard IRS framework, with LTC's faster confirmation as the main practical advantage.

Mechanics. Send LTC to a licensed platform, complete KYC, agree on the sell rate in USD, pick a payout. Litecoin block times are around 2.5 minutes; six confirmations (about 15 minutes) usually suffice for deposit. Payout via ACH, wire, or debit card.

Litecoin was built to be cheap to move, and it still is: the network fee on a sale deposit is pennies. That makes the sell-side economics unusually clean — the spread and the payout rail are effectively the entire cost. ACH suits most amounts at one to three business days; a card payout trades a higher fee for near-instant arrival; a wire's flat charge only pencils out at size. Compare venues on the quote's dollar payout — the spread and the rail's charge already sit inside it, and the pennies the network took happened at send, the same whichever venue you pick. Spreads also widen when markets move fast, so a calm day often quotes tighter than a frantic one.

IRS tax. LTC disposals are capital gain or loss events. Short-term up to 37% federal at ordinary rates, long-term 0/15/20%. State tax may stack. Many US LTC holders bought during 2017 or 2021 cycles and may have multi-year cost basis records on platforms that have since changed hands or shut down. Tools like CoinTracker and Koinly accept manual lot entries when records are partial.

From the 2025 tax year, covered brokers file Form 1099-DA on gross proceeds; the basis side of the story stays yours to prove. For coins bought across two market cycles, rebuild the lots now rather than at filing: acquisition dates and prices, wallet transaction IDs, then the quote and payout confirmation from the sale itself. The IRS lets you either take lots in the order you bought them or identify the specific lot being sold, provided your records can name it — often the difference between a short-term and a long-term rate on the same sale. Screenshots of the quote screen take seconds and settle disputes months later.

A point specific to LTC. Litecoin's MimbleWimble Extension Blocks (MWEB) added optional confidentiality in 2022. Most regulated US off-ramps, including Banxa, accept only transparent LTC. LTC sent through MWEB cannot be deposited to most institutional venues; you need to peg back to transparent LTC first.

Availability differs by state, with New York's regime the strictest of them.

Crypto prices are volatile. LTC has had multi-year drawdowns historically. This is not financial advice.
