Selling Tether in Japan
Selling Tether (USDT) in Japan follows the standard NTA framework. The Japanese stablecoin regulatory regime adds a layer of nuance.
Mechanics. Send USDT to a regulated platform on the supported network (ERC-20 Ethereum, TRC-20 Tron, or SOL), complete KYC, agree on the sell rate, pick a payout. Confirm the network with the deposit address before sending. Payout in JPY via Furikomi or card.
NTA tax. USDT disposals are zatsu shotoku at progressive rates up to 55%. The dollar value of USDT barely moves, but USD/JPY does. The JPY value of your USDT at sell can differ materially from the JPY value at purchase due to USD/JPY movement. NTA treats this as part of the zatsu shotoku calculation. Crypto-to-crypto swaps involving USDT prior to the JPY sale were also taxable events.
Stablecoin regulation in Japan changed materially in 2023 with the implementation of revised PSA rules covering stablecoins. Under the new framework, only Japanese-issued stablecoins backed by trust assets are recognised as electronic payment instruments; foreign-issued stablecoins like USDT are subject to specific distribution rules. Eligibility for retail USDT services through Banxa Japan reflects this regulatory framework; coverage may have specific requirements.
USDT briefly broke peg in 2018 and during the 2022 Terra-Luna event, dipping to 96-99 cents. Day-to-day, it trades within fractions of a cent of one dollar.
USDT is a stablecoin, not a savings product. The peg is a contractual arrangement subject to issuer risk. This is not financial advice.

Yes, as zatsu shotoku at progressive rates up to 55%. The JPY value of USDT at sell can differ from the JPY value at purchase due to USD/JPY movement, generating gain or loss. Crypto-to-crypto swaps involving USDT prior to the JPY sale were also taxable events at the time of swap.
2023 revised PSA rules created a framework for stablecoins as electronic payment instruments. Only Japanese-issued, trust-backed stablecoins are recognised in that category; foreign-issued stablecoins like USDT are subject to specific distribution rules. Eligibility for retail USDT services in Japan reflects this framework.
Whichever the deposit address specifies. USDT exists on multiple chains and they are not interchangeable. USDT-ERC20 on Ethereum cannot be sent to a USDT-TRC20 address on Tron. Sending on the wrong chain typically loses the funds. Banxa shows the network alongside the address.
