Volatility

How sharply and quickly an asset's price moves up and down over a given period.

Volatility measures how sharply and quickly a price moves up and down. A stock index might move 1% on a busy day. A major crypto can move 5% before lunch and another 5% by the close. The wider and faster the swings, the more volatile the asset.

Crypto is volatile for plain reasons. Markets trade every hour of every day, with no opening bell and no circuit breakers to pause a sell-off. Many coins have thin order books, so a single large trade shifts the price. Sentiment, borrowed money and a single headline can all move a market in minutes.

Two episodes show how far it can go. In June 2017 a large sell order on the GDAX exchange crashed the price of ethereum from about $319 to $0.10 in seconds, as the drop triggered a cascade of stop-loss and margin liquidations before it snapped back. In May 2022 the Terra/LUNA system collapsed: a coin that had traded near $80 fell to a fraction of a cent within days, wiping out tens of billions in value. Both were extreme, but both were real.

Volatility is not the same as risk, though they travel together. It is a measure of movement, not of whether you will lose money. Up moves are volatility too. Market cap gives a rough guide here. Larger assets tend to move less violently than tiny ones, because it takes far more money to shift them.

For someone using an on-ramp, the practical effect is timing. The price you see can change between deciding to buy and the trade settling. This is one reason a stablecoin exists, holding a fixed value so people can sit out the swings without leaving crypto entirely. Volatility cuts both ways. It is the engine behind the gains people chase and the losses they fear, and it can deliver both in the same week.
