Off-Ramp

A service that converts cryptocurrency back into traditional money you can spend or withdraw.

An off-ramp is a service that turns crypto back into traditional money you can spend or withdraw. It is the reverse of an on-ramp. You send coins in, the service sells them, and fiat lands in your bank account or on a card. This is how a balance on a blockchain becomes cash you can use to pay rent.

The steps mirror buying. You pick a coin and amount to sell, then send it from your wallet to the address the off-ramp gives you. Once the transfer confirms on-chain, the provider converts it at the going rate and pays you out by bank transfer or card. Settlement to your bank usually takes anywhere from 10 minutes to 3 business days, depending on the payout method and your country.

Expect the same two companions as on the way in. KYC checks apply, because anti-money-laundering law requires a regulated service to verify who is cashing out. And fees apply: a spread baked into the rate plus a withdrawal charge that varies by payout method, with bank transfers, instant card payouts, and local rails all carrying different costs that only show up in full on the final confirmation screen. Read that figure before you confirm. Not the headline rate.

One detail catches people out. To use an off-ramp you generally send funds from your own wallet, so you need to control the private key and get the wallet address exactly right. A coin sent to the wrong network or a mistyped address is usually gone. No reversal. No refund. Send a small test amount the first time you cash out with a new provider, watch it arrive, then move the rest.

Off-ramp support depends heavily on where you live, since payout rails and licensing differ by country. Some regions have many options; others have few. Check that a provider actually serves your country and currency before you start.

Banxa, which has run as an on-ramp since 2014 across 100+ countries with 100+ payment methods, sits on the buying side of this pair. An off-ramp runs the same machinery in the other direction.
