Non-custodial wallet

A non-custodial wallet is one where only you hold the keys. No exchange, no company, nobody else can move your funds or stop you from moving them. This is the practical form of self-custody, and it is the default for anyone who wants real control over their crypto.

Here is how it works. When you set up the wallet, it generates a private key and shows you a seed phrase, usually 12 or 24 words. That phrase is the master backup for the key. Write it down. The wallet then derives a wallet address you share to receive coins. To send, the app signs the transaction locally with your key and broadcasts it. The provider of the software never touches your funds and often could not, even if asked.

The benefit is full control. You can send anywhere, any time, without permission, withdrawal limits, or an account freeze. You are not exposed if the company behind the app goes under. The cost is that responsibility sits entirely with you. Lose the phrase and the money is gone. No reversal. No claw-back. A sensible routine: install a well-reviewed wallet, record the seed phrase on paper and store it offline, then send a small test amount before committing more. Treat that paper backup like the deed to a house.
