Selling Bitcoin in Brazil

Selling Bitcoin in Brazil is a story of how PIX changed the speed of fiat settlement and how Receita Federal changed the reporting overhead.

Mechanics. Send BTC to a regulated platform, complete KYC, agree on the sell rate in Brazilian reais, choose a payout. PIX is the default Brazilian rail: instant settlement, no fees for individuals, available 24/7. TED handles larger sums or where PIX limits apply. Card payouts are available with lower limits.

Receita Federal tax framework. Brazilian crypto taxation has tightened progressively since 2019. For sales through Brazilian-licensed platforms, gains on monthly proceeds exceeding R$35,000 are taxed at a progressive rate from 15% up to 22.5% based on profit size. For sales through platforms based outside Brazil, Lei 14.754/2023 introduced a flat 15% rate on annual capital gains starting 2024, with annual reporting obligations.

Receita Federal monthly reporting (Declaração de Operações com Criptoativos / DeCripto) is mandatory for individuals or entities transacting more than R$30,000 per month in crypto, regardless of profit. The reporting captures every individual disposal, the platform used, the asset, the BRL value, and the counterparty where applicable.

The Marco Legal das Criptomoedas (Lei 14.478/2022) established the regulatory framework for crypto-asset service providers, supervised by Banco Central. CVM oversees crypto-assets that meet securities tests. Banxa's coverage in Brazil reflects the Marco Legal framework and Banco Central registration where applicable.

Brazil has one of the highest stablecoin adoption rates globally, often as a way to hold dollar-denominated savings against BRL volatility. The sell flow back from BTC to BRL is mechanically the same as anywhere else; the tax framework is what shapes the timing and structure of disposals.

Crypto prices are volatile. Reporting obligations apply regardless of profit. This is not financial advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

You lock a quote in BRL, send BTC from your wallet to the address shown, and once the network confirms the deposit your payout goes out. PIX is the default rail in Brazil, settling in seconds around the clock, while TED covers larger sums and lands same-day during business hours. The Bitcoin leg sets the pace: blocks confirm roughly every ten minutes, so allow a few cycles.

Three things. A wallet you control to send the Bitcoin from. A photo ID for one-time identity verification, usually finished in minutes and skipped on later sales. And a payout account in your own name, because the name on the bank account has to match the name you verified. That match is the check that protects your payout.

Usually the coins are still confirming. Paste your transaction hash into any Bitcoin explorer and you can watch the ten-minute confirmation cycle tick through. After that, a payout can wait on a name-match review or on TED's business-hours window, whereas PIX pays out in seconds once cleared. Sell limits vary by payout method and verification level, and your quote shows them before you send anything.
