What is Crypto (VietQR)
VietQR is Vietnam's national QR payment standard, run by NAPAS, the interbank switch that connects virtually every bank in the country. Since its launch in 2021 it has become the default way Vietnamese people move đồng — the same square of black-and-white pixels taped to market stalls in Hanoi, printed on restaurant tills in Ho Chi Minh City, and built into every major banking app. Vietcombank, Techcombank, BIDV, MB, VietinBank, ACB and dozens of smaller banks all scan the same codes, because the standard sits above the banks rather than inside any one of them.
It helps to be precise about what VietQR is not. It is not a card scheme and not an e-wallet, and there is no balance to top up. A VietQR payment is an ordinary bank transfer executed instantly: you scan a code, your own banking app opens with the details filled in, you confirm, and the money moves from your account over the Napas 247 rails in seconds, around the clock, every day of the year.
At Banxa's checkout, VietQR is available to customers in Vietnam only. Choose it as your payment method and you are shown a QR code carrying the exact đồng amount and a payment reference tied to your order. Scan it with your banking app, check the details, confirm — and once the transfer lands and matches, your order proceeds and the crypto is delivered to your own wallet. Three habits make it go smoothly: pay from an account in your own name, leave the amount and reference exactly as they are, and complete the transfer while the checkout window is open.
The economics are the main reason to choose it. Most Vietnamese banks charge nothing for domestic transfers these days, so the payment leg itself is typically free. You are paying in đồng from a đồng account, so there is no card FX margin layered on top, and no card-scheme fee either. Banxa's own pricing is shown in the quoted total before you confirm — what you see on the QR is what leaves your account.
Limits come from your bank, not from the QR standard. Per-transaction and daily ceilings vary from app to app, and once your transfers pass ten million đồng in a day your bank will ask for a quick face-scan in the app before releasing more — a standard step across Vietnamese banking. If you are planning a larger purchase, it is worth checking your app's limits before you start.
One legal point deserves plain language. Vietnamese law recognises crypto as property — something you can own, hold and trade — but not as a means of payment. VietQR is how đồng leaves your bank account to buy the asset; the asset itself is not money you can spend in Vietnam. And it remains a volatile asset: prices move sharply in both directions, so only commit what you can afford to lose.
Protections work differently from cards. An instant transfer is a push payment: once you have confirmed it in your app, there is no chargeback mechanism to unwind it the way Visa or Mastercard rules can unwind a card purchase. Banxa's checkout matches your transfer to your order by amount and reference, and a payment that cannot be matched is reconciled with support rather than bounced back automatically — one more reason to scan the code rather than type the details by hand.
The practical summary for buyers in Vietnam: if you have a local bank account and its mobile app, VietQR is usually the cheapest and most direct way to buy — instant, typically free on the bank side, settled in đồng, no card details shared. Cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay remain available if you prefer them or your app's limits get in the way. VietQR appears at checkout only for customers in Vietnam paying in đồng.
