Convert Tether to Vietnamese dong at an indicative rate, and see the spread before you buy or sell through Banxa.

Dong Tether volume is large relative to the economy and concentrated in a small number of venues. Local quotes can sit some distance from the international dollar rate, so the figure reflects domestic conditions more than the token's peg, and spreads are wider than the volume alone would suggest.

How converting Tether actually works

Converting a dollar stablecoin raises a different question from converting a volatile asset. USDT is designed to hold a value of one US dollar, so the number here is really answering two things at once: what a dollar is worth in your currency, and whether the token is currently trading at its peg.

Most of the time the second part is uninteresting. USDT trades within a fraction of a percent of a dollar, and the figure you see is effectively a currency conversion with a small crypto-market wrinkle on top.

The exceptions are what matter. The token has broken its peg during periods of stress, trading down as market confidence wavered, and recovered afterwards. Those episodes were brief but they were real, and a stablecoin quote should never be read as a guarantee of a fixed value. It is a market price like any other, and it can move.

The reserves backing it are attested periodically rather than audited in the way a bank is, which has been a persistent point of contention and is worth knowing rather than discovering. USDT is also the most widely traded of the stablecoins by a wide margin, with far more of it in circulation than any alternative, so its pairs are usually the deepest available in any given currency.

The figure shown is indicative, averaged across venues in a market that trades continuously. What you would actually receive differs by the spread, and for a stablecoin conversion that spread includes the cost of the underlying currency conversion as well as the crypto side. Large orders still move through the order book and settle worse than the headline rate.
